Article: Getting the Most From Your Candle

Getting the Most From Your Candle

A few simple habits help you care for your candle. Begin with the instructions supplied with your particular candle, including its wick-trimming guidance, maximum burn time, and recommended stopping point.

Before each light

Let the wax cool completely before trimming the wick. Remove loose trimmings, used matches, and other debris from the wax. Check the vessel for damage, and do not burn a candle in cracked or chipped glass.

Choose a suitable place

Use a stable, heat-resistant surface in a ventilated room, away from drafts. Keep the candle away from curtains, books, dried flowers, and other combustible materials, and out of reach of children and pets.

While it burns

Keep the candle in sight. Follow its stated burn-time limit, even if some wax remains around the edge. Extinguish it if the flame becomes unusually high, it smokes persistently, or anything appears wrong. Never move a candle while the wax is liquid.

When you are finished

Extinguish the flame fully before leaving the room or going to sleep. Never use water to put out a candle. Allow the wax and vessel to cool before handling, and stop using the candle at the remaining-wax level stated in its instructions.

Keep care information close

Keep the label or care card with your candle. For additional guidance, see the National Candle Association's candle safety tips.
